Acupuncture for hayfever - case study
Man - age 43
This man had severe hayfever, onset 25 years or more before coming for acupuncture treatment. His hayfever would begin any time between January or March. His main symptoms were itchy eyes and constant runny nose, sneezing for half an hour or so at a time, red blood shot eye, and feeling generally agitated. These symptoms come and go from morning to night. His hayfever usually lasts until October. He came to see me at the end of April.
First acupuncture treatment results-
Three days after his first acupuncture treatment he was much improved. He still experienced hayfever except that instead of lasting up to three hours at a time, these ones lasted only 5 - 10 minutes.
Second acupuncture treatment results -
He has had no further symptoms after his second treatment. He had a third acupuncture treatment to consolidate the effects.
Note - this treatment was particularly fast - it can take up to six or so treatments for some cases.
Acupuncture treatment for allergic rhinitis - Case Study
Man - age 68This gentleman had developed allergic rhinitis for the past 15 years. His main symptoms were constant post-nasal drip and lots of phlegm. It was all very unpleasant for him. He had already tried all the usual anti-histamines, antibiotics, steroid nasal sprays etc. but none of these had worked.
He previously suffered from sinus congestion, especially when playing sport in cold weather. Otherwise this man was generally in good shape and very good spirit - the only thing getting him down was his rhinitis.
This man had six acupuncture treatments in all. After the first four treatments the symptoms became worse for one day and then improved a lot. He also developed other symptoms, such as mild aches in his muscles lasting a day or so. But after the fifth treatment he was generally much better. After the sixth acupuncture treatment he had no more symptoms.
It is not uncommon for a light worsening of symptoms for a day or two after acupuncture treatment - depending on the condition being treated. It is also not uncommon to have an apparent set-back in treatment for a short time. But this man was delighted that for the first time in fifteen years he was free of phlegm and post-nasal drip.
